Despite its importance, the perinatal period remains one of the least understood stages of human brain development.

The MRC Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) in Human Neural Development uses cutting-edge imaging, human model systems and computational approaches to investigate how the cerebral cortex (the part of the brain responsible for language, planning and creativity) develops before and after birth.

Bringing together scientists, clinicians, families and industry partners, we are generating fundamental new knowledge about the developing brain and translating these discoveries into practical tools to improve care for children and families.

The MRC CoRE in Human Neural Development is led by Professor Oscar Marín (Director), Professor Tomoki Arichi and Professor Emily Jones at King's College London, Professor Shruti Garg (Translational Lead and Deputy Director) at The University of Manchester, and Professor Ilias Tachtsidis (Innovation Lead and Deputy Director) at University College London.
