Patho-aetiology of Periodontal diseases
Identification of aetiopathogenetic mechanisms of periodontal and peri-implant disease including microbial, genetic, behavioural and environmental factors. This is done by using a range of basic and translational methodologies for host genetic and microbial analysis and for the study of biomarkers and other indicators suitable for early detection/prevention of periodontitis and for prediction and ultimately improvement of treatment outcome.
Periodontal Medicine
Study of mechanisms of associations between periodontal disease and systemic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, adverse pregnancy outcomes, Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline. This involves epidemiological and translational studies to detect associations and diagnostic biomarkers.
Minimally-invasive, reconstructive and regenerative periodontal treatments
Investigation into personalised treatments for advanced periodontal lesions such as intrabony defects and furcation involvement, ranging from studies of fundamental periodontal cell biology to understand effects of complex regenerative approaches with the aim of developing novel tissue-engineering treatment strategies and pathways to minimally-invasive non-surgical therapy. This is combined with behavioural and other interventions aimed at secondary prevention and at improving patients’ quality of life.
