Queering Private Law is an innovative academic initiative at the intersection of queer theory and private law. While these fields have traditionally developed in isolation, their convergence offers transformative potential for more inclusive and equitable legal systems.

Private law governs much of everyday life, through contracts, property, torts, and corporate governance, yet it often rests on binary assumptions and heteronormative norms that disadvantage LGBTQI+ and other marginalised communities. Drawing on queer theory and methodologies, we seek to expose hidden power structures in legal doctrines and to reimagine them in ways that better reflect diverse lived experiences.

We examine how legal categories construct reality, challenge assumed standards of reasonableness, and explore how identity operates within legal frameworks, opening new possibilities for more just and inclusive legal systems.

At a time of intensifying global attacks on LGBTQI+ rights, we believe that private law can provide vital protections. Our work equips scholars, practitioners, and advocates with both theoretical insights and practical strategies across areas such as contracts, family law, intellectual property, and torts.
