Follicle stimulating hormone and ovarian ageing
Ovarian ageing is a naturally occurring process that results in declining fertility and the development of a number of life-changing co-morbidities including osteoporosis and heart disease. One of the earliest biomarkers of ovarian ageing is elevated serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a hormone which is essential for reproduction. Through our BBSRC funded work, we are determining (I) how age-related changes in FSH impacts ovarian functions throughout the ageing process (ii) what causes these changes in FSH to occur. Through these approaches we aim to identify novel therapeutic targets with the potential of treating both naturally occurring and premature ovarian ageing, to promote women's health and wellbeing.
