We study mechanical forces controlling epithelial cell turnover. We discovered that excess epithelial cells get extruded by their neighbouring cells. Extrusion is essential for maintaining a functional barrier and we now find several deadly, yet common disease hijack this process, including metastatic cancer and asthma.
