University of British Columbia
The University of British Columbia (UBC), established in 1908, is one of Canada’s leading research universities and is consistently ranked among the top 40 in the world. The university attracts 54,000 students from across Canada and 140 countries around the world to two major campuses.
The Vancouver campus is located at the western tip of the Point Grey Peninsula in the city of Vancouver in British Columbia, on the West Coast of Canada. More than 400 hectares in size, the campus is surrounded by forest on three sides and ocean on the fourth, and is just a 30 minute bus ride to downtown Vancouver. Vancouver is a diverse and cosmopolitan city located about 2 hours from Whistler, known for its world-class skiing and snowboarding and 3 hours from the Washington boarder. Known for being one of the most liveable cities in the world, you have the beauty of the mountains and the ocean paired with a relatively mild climate.
Purpose-built for the 21st century, the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus opened in Kelowna in 2005 approximately four hours' drive from Vancouver set in the beautiful and temperate wine country. Known for its mild winters and warm summers, Kelowna is set on Lake Okanagan and is popular for water sports and has an active student scene. The smaller campus provides a more intimate learning experience and a community atmosphere.
The opportunity to study on the West Coast provides excellent links to both the United States and the rest of Canada, in a picturesque and multi-cultural environment at a world-class institution.
Eligibility for King's students
Important: Final decision on students' study abroad application to their host institution rests entirely with that host institution. Students must also meet their departments’ academic requirements to obtain final departmental approval to study abroad. It is usually at least a 60% average prior to departure, however this can vary amongst departments. Students should double check with their Study Abroad Tutor if they are unsure of their academic requirements.
King’s students that wish to study abroad at this institution should check the ‘Undergraduate options by department’ page to see if this institution is indeed an option for them.
Estimated living costs
Please see here for current estimated living costs, but actual expenses may vary depending on student lifestyle. The cost of travel to and from the country is not included in these estimates.
A reminder that King's students on exchange are not required to pay tuition fees to the host university, but you may incur administrative and/or orientation fees at the host. There may also be mandatory insurance costs, and transcripts may incur a fee.
Please also note that, if required, student visas often require applicants to supply evidence of financial support throughout the duration of the study abroad programme. Sometimes this will mean showing financial evidence for a specific amount, so please pay attention to the advice on this from the host institution.
