The programmes displayed on this page are non-exchange opportunities, not part of our Global Summer Exchange programme, and are listed here for your information only. If you are interested in applying for any of the programmes, you should consult the organiser’s website for more information. You will also need to apply directly through them.

Not all the overseas summer opportunities that King's offers have exchange and fee-waiver places available and students applying to these non-exchange opportunities will be responsible for covering all the costs involved.

In addition to summer programmes and other short term activities taking place at other points of the year, we will also share other opportunities including for research, internship and volunteering activities here.

These programmes are suitable for current King's students, those due to graduate this year, and in some cases, recent graduates. Please check the eligibility criteria to make sure they are suitable for you.

Amgen Scholars Programme

The Amgen Scholars Program aims to open the door to research opportunities at 24 host institutions for undergraduates from any four-year college or university in a given region.

Made possible through a 16-year, $74 million commitment from the Amgen Foundation, Amgen Scholars allows undergraduates from across the globe to participate in cutting-edge research opportunities at world-class institutions. 24 premier educational and research institutions across the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada currently host the summer program.

Undergraduate participants benefit from undertaking a research project under top faculty, being part of a cohort-based experience of seminars and networking events, and taking part in a symposium in their respective region where they meet their peers, learn about biotechnology, and hear from leading scientists.

The SJTU International Summer Research Internship Program seeks to promote international research collaboration and to enhance the academic environment at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 2020 SJTU Summer Research Internship Program

Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award (SIPGA)

The Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award (SIPGA) supports short-term research attachments for top international students at A*STAR, giving you the unique opportunity to experience the vibrant scientific environment in A*STAR Research Institutes and Consortia, and work with distinguished and world-renowned researchers.

This award is eligible for students who are pursuing their Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees. If you’re considering PhD studies in A*STAR, do apply for the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) programme. 

Eligibility: This opportunity for a minimum two month internship is open to students in Biomedical, Science and Engineering related disciplines who are undergraduate students in their third or fourth year, or Master students.

Fees and funding: Students are given a monthly stipend of $1,500.

Summer Program of Internship and Korean Experience (SPIKE)

Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) offers one of the world's most exotic summer programs, whereby students gain hands-on research internship experience in the latest scientific fields together with the opportunity to take summer courses and obtain fundamental Korean language skills. The entire eight week program begins with a full four week cultural and language course followed by four weeks of scientific research at UNIST. Also, lots of excursions to modern and historical places are offered to experience real Korean life.

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Programme (UTRIP)

This is a summer internship programme for students majoring in science and other relevant fields. It provides students with an opportunity to gain the experience of "real graduate-school life" or "research-centered life." UTRIP is a gateway to pursuing an advanced degree and experiencing academic life at our university. Participants on UTRIP will also be granted financial support to cover their costs and expenses.

This opportunity is suitable for students from NMS and Bioscience backgrounds.

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program

University of British Colombia - Visiting International Research Students (VIRS)

UBC is a hub for outstanding researchers from around the world and welcomes visiting international research students (VIRS) to participate in our community of inquiry. The VIRS program is for students to conduct full-time research full-time at UBC. The student is under the supervision of a UBC faculty member.

The student should be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or graduate-equivalent program at an international university 


  • A VIRS student must meeting all of the following criteria:

  • Not have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status

  • Intend to come to UBC solely for the purpose of research that aligns with their academic program at their home university

  • Plan to engage in research education and conduct research for one month or longer (maximum 12 months)

  • Have no intention to enter into an employment relationship with the university related to the research

  • Obtain the approval for research activities at UBC by obtaining signatures from:

  • 1. Host supervisor (i.e. a UBC faculty member who has agreed to act as supervisor through the proposed research period at UBC)
    2. UBC Department Head for the unit or laboratory with which the visiting research student will be affiliated
    3. Home university or sponsoring program
    4. Supervisor from home institution

Universite de Lausanne Summer Undergraduade Research Programme

The UNIL's School of Biology launches a call for applications to the 2020 Summer Undergraduate Research (SUR) Programme in the biological sciences.

This English-taught 8-week programme (July 6th to August 28th, 2020) aims at introducing Bachelor-level students to the world of biological and biomedical research: Individual students will be each integrated in a different experimental research laboratory of the School of Biology. This 10th edition of the SUR Programme will host around 15 participants from all over the world, including a couple of local students.

A full scholarship toward tuition costs, living expenses and justified travel costs will be awarded to all selected participants.

Zhejiang University - ZJU Scholars Summer Research Program

In the summer of 2019, Zhejiang University will hold the 2nd ZJU Scholars Summer Research Program for talented students from selected partner universities with the aim of promoting existing academic ties among its strategic partners and providing cutting-edge research experience to the young generation of future leaders and experts worldwide.

ZJU will provide up to two students with a scholarship to participate in a research project of their choice at ZJU for 8 weeks from 18 June - 13 August 2019. The scholarship includes:

  • Waived application fee and program tuition fee

  • Free on-campus accommodation from 17 June - 14 August 2019 (double room)

  • A living allowance of 2800 RMB (approximately 400 USD) per person

Students will have to bear their own international airfare, local transportation, insurance, visa application fee as well as other personal expenses in Hangzhou.

Successful applicants will participate in a research project in the field of Humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering, information technology, agriculture & environment, and medicine.

Volunteer projects include improving the quality of education in rural or underprivileged communities; protecting the environment and raising awareness about climate change; or teaching in schools and educational institutions.

Generation UK - China (British Council)

Want to intern in China next year? Funded two-month placements are available through the British Council’s Generation UK internship programme. You choose your industry sector and which of six exciting Chinese cities you’d like to work in. Start dates are available throughout the year, so you can carry out your placement in the months that suit you. 

Placements are available in a variety of sectors, from Law, Finance and Engineering to Marketing, Sales and Fashion, and a wide range of further options! So, if you're looking to gain professional experience in your chosen sector, why not consider interning in China?

Funding covers internship placement fees, accommodation and comprehensive travel insurance, as well as your airport pick-up and dedicated support throughout your placement.

This opportunity is for UK students and recent graduates and funding is focused on those from low-income backgrounds. Further eligibility criteria apply and you can find these on our website.

International Citizen Service

ICS is a UK government-funded development programme that brings together 18 to 25-year-olds from all backgrounds to fight poverty in overseas and UK communities. If you are 23 or over you can apply for a Team Leader role.

ICS believes you don’t need cash, skills or qualifications to volunteer overseas – just the ambition to make a difference. As well as structured training and support, ICS volunteers receive their visas, flights, travel and medical insurance, medication, vaccines, food and accommodation and a small allowance during their placement.

Volunteers will be expected to fundraise a set amount, typically £800, to contribute to the overall cost of their placement.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Summer Research Internship

SJTU Summer Research Internship Program aims to promote international research collaboration and enhance the academic environment at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It offers excellent undergraduate students from around the world the opportunity to spend a summer studying at world-class research laboratories, alongside prominent research professors. It will prepare undergraduate students for further studies through intensive research experience with faculty mentors and enrichment activities.

Study China

If you are interested in spending three weeks at a Chinese University, this is an ideal opportunity which is funded by the UK Government. Study China runs during the summer, and is separate from your degree.

You will complete an intensive Chinese Mandarin course designed to develop your written and spoken language skills, as well as cultural classes, visits and excursions. We offer classes for all abilities, ranging from absolute beginners through to advanced speakers.

Other summer opportunities

ASEF Summer University

The ASEF Summer University (ASEFSU) is a 2-week experiential learning journey and “Interdisciplinary Innovathon” for students and young professionals. Designed to foster cross-cultural exchanges and networks among youth from ASEM countries, it offers opportunities for students and young professionals to broaden their horizons, deepen their knowledge on contemporary issues and propose concrete solutions to pressing societal challenges. These solutions range from design mock-ups of architectural solutions to technological innovations, policy and strategy briefs to practical project proposals, promotional videos to communication plans, and more. The outcomes of the ASEFSU project are presented at high-level ASEM meetings and thematic conferences as input to the deliberations of policy makers and for possible implementation by practitioners.

ASEFSU takes place on an annual basis, each year tackling a different theme of socio-political concern within Asia and Europe. ASEFSU makes a positive impact within ASEM societies as it offers tangible results and daring proposals for innovation, and promotes sustainable development.

Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) summer school

Applications are now open for ACU Summer School 2020! Hosted by the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, from 2-10 August, this year's summer school will address the theme The Migration generation? Climate, youth and refugees.

The event

Join us in Ghana in August 2020 for a week of expert lectures by local and international speakers, social events, engaging and challenging group project work and networking opportunities.

By participating in the Summer School you will have the chance to immerse yourself in Ghanaian culture and history, and explore key locations with field trips related to the theme.

Who should attend?

The event is multi-disciplinary: it is appropriate both for those studying fields related to migration, and students from other fields who are interested in how they can apply their discipline to the theme.

Students who have previously attended an ACU Summer School are not eligible to apply.


Students should apply directly, using the online application form, by Sunday 12 January 2020. 

Successful applicants will be required to pay a registration fee of GBP £400. A limited number of bursaries are also available.

European Summer School Prague

The European Summer School in Prague is an intensive 10-day learning programme focused on European integration. It is organized by one of the leading think-tanks in Central Europe, EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy, in co-operation with Prague College and the Charles University Faculty of Social Sciences. A variety of courses are available.

JSPS Summer Programme

The JSPS Summer Programme provides the opportunity for current MPhil or PhD students to receive a one week orientation on Japanese culture and research systems on arrival and then move to a host institution in Japan of their choice and approved by JSPS, to conduct collaborative research activities for 2 months during the summer.

Value of award: Return international airfare, maintenance allowance (534,000, JPY), research support allowance (158,500 JPY) and overseas travel and accident insurance policy are provided.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a UK national and a current MPhil or PhD student based at a UK university or research institution at the time of application. Eligible research fields are not limited.

Study of the US Institutes (SUSI)

The US-UK Fulbright Commission and US Department State announces the opening of applications for the Study of the US Institutes (SUSIs) for Student Leaders.

The five-week academic summer programmes for undergraduate students are meant to develop student understandings of the USA and develop leadership skills. The SUSIs are fully funded, and open to all students irrespective of their current field of study.The institutes include:

  • SUSI for Student Leaders  - Education and the Future of Work

Summer School of Economics and Business at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid

After 4 very successful editions, totalling 111 students from 25 countries, UAM is once again offering its Summer School of Economics and Business, from June 29 to July 24, 2020, and we very much hope you will have some students interested. Application period is already open!

The SSEB is a Summer Term, where four of the regular (and most popular among international students) courses are offered. Courses are taught in English in an intensive 4-week format (one or two courses to be chosen from the following, 6 or 12 ECTS credits):

  • Doing Business in Spain

The SSEB brings together students from all over the world in a truly international environment. The academic excellence of our summer term is complimented by social and cultural events, as well as field trips, which are not offered during the regular Fall and Spring semesters.

The Green Program

Created for students, by students, TGP has introduced a new model for education abroad – driven by a desire to provide purposeful, hands-on industry exposure at a fraction of the time and cost.
