Global Summer Exchanges

We are delighted to announce that the Global Summer Exchange will return in 2023. Details are still to be confirmed, but students can stay up to date on deadlines and locations by signing up to our mailing list.

King's Global Summer Exchanges are a great opportunity for all students- but especially those who aren't able to study abroad during the academic year, whether this is for personal reasons or because study abroad isn't offered as part of their degree. Just like our term time exchanges, the tuition fee will be waived for King's students nominated to any of the programmes, as a result of our partnerships with institutions worldwide.

How to apply: Application Information & Deadlines

Details below pertain to summer 2022 applications. Please use this as a reference- details may change.

We are delighted to announce the application for summer 2022 will launch on Friday 14 January, 2022 (9am). You can access the application form via the internal pages  This application is for the following locations:

  • Aarhus

  • Seoul National

  • Geneva

  • FUBiS

  • Yonsei

  • VU Amsterdam

  • Humboldt

  • Sydney

  • Utrecht

  • Hankuk

  • Korea

  • Pisa

  • Ashoka

  • Tec

  • Radboud

  • UNC

  • The American University of Cairo

  • Fudan

  • Taiwan

The first fully completed application will receive their first choice location. All other applications will be assessed after the deadline.

The deadline to complete the application will be Sunday 13 February 2022 (midnight).

As we have not received information on the remaining partner locations listed on our webpages, we are not certain if their programmes will run this year/will be eligible for exchange students. Should they open and be available for exchange students, it is possible that Global Mobility will be able to launch a later application for these locations; there is no guarantee for this however, so students are advised to apply in the current round.

As part of the application, students will be able to put down up to four choices and will be prompted to respond to the following questions:

  • Please explain in your own words why you have selected this location as your first choice.

  • Please explain in your own words why you have selected your additional choice(s)? (students with 1 choice will not be prompted to complete this question)

  • Please indicate the total costs for each of the exchanges you have listed. This should factor in all costs except for tuition fees, as these are waived as part of the programme.

  • What are your learning objectives and/or aims to achieve through the summer exchange?

At present, there are still existing quarantine arrangements for some of the countries advertised. While we cannot confirm that these will be lifted in time for the exchange, students are encouraged to research this prior to applying. It is also recommended that you discuss your summer plans with parents/carers/friends so you can make an informed decision.

Funding

The Broadening Horizons Award is available to students successful with their summer exchange application. Please note that if you are offered a grant through Broadening Horizons, you may not actually receive the money until May/June.

Students who submit an application for earlier rounds and apply for a Broadening Horizons Award will not hear about the outcome of the grant application until the Broadening Horizons application has closed. Students will therefore need to accept/reject their summer exchange offers without knowing the outcome of their funding application. A reminder that all awards are a contribution towards study abroad and will not cover all of the costs; students should therefore not rely heavily on these.

There is also funding available through our Global Summer Exchange Award: please see here.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who can apply?

Only students registered, and in attendance on a KCL programme, at the point of application can apply. Students from any discipline, any year group can apply to the programme. Final years, postgraduates and students with placements in the summer should only ensure that there is no overlap with any projects or graduation ceremonies (where applicable).

Where can I go?

Students can apply for any of our partner universities listed for application. There are some programmes which may have pre-requisites or special admission requirements, but these would be listed on the partner page.

Can I attend more than one programme during the summer?

Students can apply for up to four locations, but are only allocated one. This is to enable as many King's students as possible to have the opportunity.

If the programme says TBC on the page, what does this mean?

This means that the programme will be advertised pending either an agreement renewal or a condition that must be met first between the two parties. Students in some instances may be able to apply for these institutions, but would be notified in good timing (where possible) if it cannot go ahead?

What can I study?

Students can opt in for classes that are outside of their usual discipline, pending there is no requirement by the partner that they have prior knowledge.

Can I transfer credit from my programme abroad, to my KCL degree?

At present, students cannot transfer credit to their KCL degree. Instead, students receive a transcript/certificate of completion from their host university which is just as good, and can be added to their CVs/Educational History.

How much does this programme cost?

King's students do not pay tuition fees to the partner university if they attend via the exchange. Students should therefore expect to pay travel expenses (such as flights, visas, vaccinations) and accommodation fees. There may also be other fees such as social programmes, admin fees that students would look into themselevs as part of their research and preparation to attend the programme.

Are there any funding opportunities I can opt in for?

There are currently two KCL awards that students can opt in for when attending this programme. The Broadening Horizons award is aimed at increasing the number of widening participation students who can and access the mobility opportunities available to them at King's. The Global Summer Exchange Award is aimed at all students on the programme, encouraging them to contribute media pieces to further promote global mobilities. Please see details on this page for details on this award, as well as any external opportunities. Note: Any award granted as part of the programme, will not cover all costs.
