Will any HSDTC training courses be run on campus over the 2022-23 academic year?
Yes, some HSDTC courses will be delivered in-person and on campus over the 2022-23 academic year. To ensure that those who are unable to attend on campus courses, most of these courses will also have online occurrences.
Even though we are reintroducing in-person courses again this year, we will still be delivering the majority of our training virtually, either as live sessions or on-demand. Please check the venue information when you're booking onto a course on SkillsForge.
How should I assess my own training needs?
We strongly recommend that at the start of your PhD you discuss with your supervisor the kind of training that would be of benefit to you during your first year, using the information in these webpages as a guide.
You will also have regular progress meetings with a thesis committee and these meetings are a good time to reflect on and reassess your training needs as appropriate.
Who can book onto HSDTC courses?
The HSDTC exists primarily to provide training, development and careers support for doctoral research students (including DClinPsy, DHC, MD(Res), MPhil, MRes, PhD) in the four Health Faculties at King's College London, and these students have priority booking on HSDTC courses.
In some cases, however, we may be able to offer places to research and other staff at King’s, for example if this has been agreed with course trainers beforehand, or if the course is undersubscribed by doctoral research students.
In some cases we may need to charge a fee for King's staff to attend a course. Details of who a specific course is for will be given on the SkillsForge booking page or online application form, but please get in touch if you’d like further information.
How do I book a course?
You'll find brief course outlines and SkillsForge booking links on our Course Listings page. Currently bookable HSDTC courses can now also be viewed in our new Researcher Development Training Calendar.
When bookings for a particular course are open, you can normally book your place directly via SkillsForge.
In some instances we will ask you to submit a short application before offering you a place on a course; where this is the case, this will be explained clearly and full instructions will be given.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for, it could be that a particular course doesn't currently have any upcoming sessions, but please get in touch with us if you’re unsure, or if you have any questions about a particular course.
Please note that workshop details are subject to change at short notice, so please follow us on Twitter for the latest updates, and make sure to check your monthly email newsletter.
How do I cancel a booking?
If you have booked onto an HSDTC workshop and discover that you are unable to attend, we would normally expect you to give notice of cancellation of at least two working days so that your place can be offered to another student.
If you do not attend a workshop that you are booked onto and do not let us know or are unable to provide a good reason for not attending, you may be disqualified from participating in further HSDTC training opportunities.
