Teaching & modules
Modules
Year 1 – Required Modules
For Full-time MSc:
- MSc Mathematics Project (60 credits)
The topic chosen for the project should be in Pure Mathematics.
For the Part-Time MSc:
There are no required modules in year 1.
Year 1 – Optional Modules
Full - time MSc: you are required to take at least 75 credits from a prescribed list of modules, which may typically include those listed below.
Part - time MSc:
In the first year of study, you are required to take at least 45 credits and at most 75 credits (usually 5 taught modules).
Over the two years you are required to take 75 credits from a prescribed list of modules, which may typically include:
- Advanced Algebra (15 credits)
- Lie Groups & Lie Algebras (15 credits)
- Infinite Dimensional Vector Spaces (15 credits)
- Manifolds (15 credits)
- Galois Theory (15 credits)
- Geometric Topology (15 credits)
- Algebraic Number Theory (15 credits)
- Operators on Infinite Dimensional Vector Spaces (15 credits)
- Fourier Analysis (15 credits)
- Algebraic Geometry (15 credits)
For the Part-Time MSc: You can also take optional modules as noted under the Year 2 optional modules section, ensuring that no more than 75 credits are taken in the first year of study.
For Full - Time MSc: Other optional modules should be selected to bring the total of credits to 180. Subject to the approval of the Programme Director, modules can be selected from:
- The prescribed list of required modules.
- Level 6 modules in Pure Mathematics from within the Mathematics Department (max 30 credits).
- Intercollegiate level 7 Mathematics modules at another University of London College excluding Birkbeck and LSE (max 30 credits).
- Maths modules from the MSc Complex Systems and Data Modelling (7CCMCSxx modules), modules from the MSc Theoretical Physics, or modules from the MSc Financial Mathematics with Data Science (7CCMFMxx modules) programmes (max 45 credits).*
*Note that any modules taken at other University of London institutions in the areas of Complex Systems, Financial Mathematics or Theoretical Physics count towards this total of modules.
Year 2 - For Part-Time MSc only
Required Modules:
- MSc Mathematics Project (60 credits)
The topic chosen for the project should be in Pure Mathematics.
In addition, you are required to take modules from the prescribed list, noted in the year 1 optional modules, if you have not already taken 75 credits from that selection.
Optional Modules
You are required to take sufficient credits to bring your total for the course to 180 credits, from a range of optional modules. Subject to the approval of the Programme Director, modules can be selected from:
- The prescribed list of optional modules above.
Teaching methods - what to expect
We use lectures and group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the course. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study.
Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work, e.g. 150 hours work for a 15-credit module. These hours cover every aspect of the module: lectures, tutorials, independent study, coursework and preparation for examinations.
During your work on the MSc Project, you will have regular meetings with your project supervisor, but you are expected to spend the majority of your time in self-study to complete the project.
We will use a delivery method that will ensure students have a rich, exciting experience from the start. Face to face teaching will be complemented and supported with innovative technology so that students also experience elements of digital learning and assessment.
The majority of learning for this degree takes place at King’s College London Strand Campus, with occasional lectures and practical sessions taking place at the Waterloo Campus. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary depending on the optional modules you select.
Assessment
- Course Work
- Written/practical examinations
- Unseen written examinations
- Class tests
- Online quizzes
Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include unseen written exams, class tests, online quizzes and coursework submission. Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling 180 credits.
