This project supports underrepresented pupils with their journey to Medical and Dental schools. Raising awareness of potential educational & career pathways in year 10 and enabling year 11-12 pupils to navigate the admissions process.
This programme equips young people with the awareness, knowledge, and skills to successfully navigate the complex Medicine and Dentistry admissions processes. It introduces pupils to medical terminology, the variety of careers on offer in the NHS, and inspires them to undertake their own research.
Year 10 pupils try out practical skills such as CPR and operating a defibrillator. They will also learn how to take blood, how healthcare services are delivered to patients, and ask medical students about their experiences.
Year 11 & 12 pupils lead their own learning guided by lesson plans and workbooks covering topics including personal statement support, UCAT guidance, and mock interview practice. Over the summer, MedSoc’s will be invited onto the King’s campus to network with other MedSoc participants, current King’s healthcare students and take part in university taster sessions.
Non-selective state schools in Greater London with a high percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals, historically low medical applications and minimal medical outreach activities with HE institutions. Students should be taking biology and chemistry at GCSE and have an interest in science and healthcare.
Medical activity days will be offered in-school to year 10 pupils to garner interest in a possible healthcare career. Pupils in years 11 and 12 will be supported by their teachers and the King's widening participation team and students to set-up their MedSoc Society. King’s Outreach for Medicine and Dentistry student ambassadors' and our Outreach for Medicine & Partnerships Officer Aniqa Rob will be the key points of contact for MedSoc’s student representatives.
If you are a teacher from a non-selective state school and would be interested in setting up King’s MedSoc in your school please contact Aniqa Rob, Outreach for Medicine & Dentistry Officer, via email on aniqa.rob@kcl.ac.uk.
