Teaching methods - what to expect
Guided independent study encourages students to learn and study outside of scheduled teaching and seminar sessions. Supported by clear guidance and suggested materials, students gain in depth knowledge and understanding of course content. I also enables students to engage in topics or areas of particular interest to them, encouraging development of independent critical judgement and analytical thought, self-directed learning and time-management skills.
In-person teaching can take several forms, but all involve face-to-face interaction and engagement between staff and students in a structured learning environment. Lectures involve lecturer-led teaching on key concepts, themes, and methods, with opportunities for clarification. Seminars and tutorials are smaller groups of student-led discussion that use active participation and collaborative learning to deepen understanding and skills. Workshops are practice-based learning environments where skills are modelled by the tutor and practiced by the students.
Off-Campus learning involves work placements or studying at a partner institution. Work placements are practice-based learning, in which students develop their language, communication, and other professional and transferable skills in the target language. Study at a partner institution involves the teaching approaches above (lecture/seminar/tutorial/workshop) in the target language. Both modes develop target language acquisition, communication skills, and cultural competence.

Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include coursework and assessed essays; language assignments (written, oral, aural); individual or group-based presentations; year abroad project work; examinations; and dissertation. You will also have a variety of formative assessments (not for credit) throughout your programme.
