Learning to work with real-world problems
Real-world problems rarely arrive as neat textbook exercises. They are often ambiguous, incomplete and full of assumptions. Throughout the degree, you will learn how to turn these problems into mathematical questions that can be explored, modelled and tested.
You will practise this from the first year, beginning with guided modelling tasks and building towards more open-ended projects. In your final year, you will complete an advanced project in quantitative modelling, working from an externally defined brief and bringing together the mathematics, computation, statistics, modelling and communication skills developed across the degree.
Supported by academic and industry partners, you will work in a small team to scope a problem, build and test a modelling approach, document your work and present your conclusions to different audiences. The aim is to help you make the transition from student to practitioner: someone who can use mathematics to understand complex problems and produce clear, responsible, professional-quality work.
