Biography
I am a Senior Lecturer in Geography with current research interests in the cultural politics of 'alternative' foods, environment and development, celebrity politics and the shifting geographies, moralities and politics of consumer cultures.
Growing up in 'the land of equi-distant trees' and emerging from behind the Orange Curtain in the deepest, darkest suburbs of Irvine, California, I obtained my undergraduate degree in Social Sciences (Summa Cum Laude) from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in 1993. I went on to do an MA in Geography at the University of Oregon and completed my Ph.D in Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2005.
I am currently on the editorial boards of Geography Compass (Environment and Society section), Capitalism, Nature, Socialism and have taken up a position at Ashgate as the book series editor for 'Critical Food Studies'. I am a member of the Department's Environment, Politics and Development Research Group and am the Chair of the Teaching Committee for the School of Social Science and Public Policy. With Max Boykoff (Environmental Studies, Univ. of Colorado) and many others, I am involved in developing a novel network of scholars interested in the connections of celebrity, media and the environment.
Very recently (Feb., 2010), I was nominated for the HE Academy's National Teaching Fellowship Scheme. For the academic year 2007/08, I received the student-nominated 'Excellence in Teaching' award from the SSPP at King's and was nominated for the award again for 2008/09. Since September, 2007, I have been an Associate of the King's Learning Institute (KLI) to explore and expand on my interest in geographic pedagogy and mentor-based reading and writing 'labs'.
