Democratization of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the Context of Chinese Sovereignty Research seminar
Dr Łukasz Zamęcki, University of Warsaw
5-6pm, Thursday 5 December
Room S-1.22, Strand Building, Strand Campus
This talk will concentrate on the process of Hong Kong
democratization and the influence of mainland China on this process. It will particularly highlight the endogenous restraints for
democratization, such as presence of anti-democratic organizations connected to
Beijing and the high level of socio-economic development and civil liberties
connected with weak emotional attachment to parties. The key issue will be also the
role of the instruments of the PRC influence on Hong Kong’s democratization process
(pro-Beijing Hong Kong politicians, pro-Beijing Chief Executive, immigration
process from mainland China, the rules of interpretation of the Basic Law of
the HKSAR). The conclusions concern the future of democratization of Hong Kong
related to the electoral reforms plans.
