Maximum nutrition, minimum waste: ‘Root-to-Tip’ dining
Improving diet and sustainability through recipes using the whole plant.
King’s recognises the importance of food as a key area of sustainability, and is working to improve the environmental and social impact of the food we offer across our community.
Food production accounts for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. We therefore have a responsibility to offer and encourage sustainable, low-carbon options through our University restaurants and catering operations.
Our Sustainable Food Policy sets out our key commitments, including sourcing locally and seasonally, and providing meat-free options in restaurants and outlets. Our Fairtrade Policy also commits us to sourcing and supporting Fairtrade products.

“Maintain our current sustainable status within the Higher Education catering sector with our King’s community engaged in understanding sustainability-focused decision making and behaviours.”
King's Food is our in-house catering team, and run cafés, restaurants and hospitality for events on campus. They are continuously embedding sustainability initiatives into their operations to transform the university food experience. By prioritising meals that benefit both people and the planet, they are helping to foster a culture centred on wellbeing, sustainability, and inclusivity. Read more about their work to help lead the change in sustainable dining through a student- and research-led approach.

The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) is a not-for-profit membership organisation which supports food-service businesses working towards sustainability in their sector and guides customers towards more sustainable dining choices through its Food Made Good standard. The SRA’s Food Made Good rating sets out a 10 key area framework for continual improvement. Receiving the Standard demonstrates a holistic approach towards every element of sustainability at King’s Food, with emphasis on sourcing ingredients; supporting farmers and fishers; treating staff fairly; supporting the community; reducing waste; and recycling. This is the second time King’s Food has been awarded the Three Star status, with a score of 94%.
