Research Assurance

Our work

The key responsibility of Research Assurance is to provide appropriate and effective assurance oversight for the Research and Researcher Function. The team support the Director of Business Assurance in reporting to governors and members of the senior executive in order to contribute both to a robust governance framework within the university and an effective culture of process improvement. 

Research Assurance undertake a range of work within the Research and Researcher Function, often in collaboration with other senior members of the Department of Business Assurance, aimed at providing assurance on risk management, regulatory and legislative compliance, value for money and operation of controls. This work covers all aspects of activity in the Research and Researcher Function, including arrangements with funders at pre- and post-award level, contract management, consultancy management, licensing and Intellectual Property management, research governance and ethics. 

Research Assurance also provide a wide scope of project assurance management support services for and on behalf of the College Secretary.  

Other core functions include:

  • Responsibility for developing and maintaining a two-tier Due Diligence framework in collaboration with RMID and other professional services areas on all sub-awards to ensure full compliance to terms and conditions of funding and ODA requirements;

  • Lead on Due Diligence reviews for new commercial funder or grant giving bodies and manage and co-ordinate assessment panels for third party partners or service providers where required, providing final overall College Assessment;

  • Provide expert advice on compliance and risk management to staff within the Research and Researcher Function, principal investigators and their academic teams and professional services staff within faculties in relation to all aspects of research management;

  • Engage with the research community and those who support them to provide appropriate training opportunities (in consultation and collaboration with RMID unit heads) in order to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and funder terms;

  • Act as the lead (alongside the appropriate function leads) for any outside agency or funder wishing to undertake audits of the university’s management of research grants or to carry out other external reviews of research management working closely with the Senior Vice-President (Operations), Vice-President (Finance) and the Operations Director (Research & Researcher);

  • To support the Operations Director (Research & Researcher) and members of their teams to co-ordinate and support visits from external parties;

  • Develop and maintain relationships with risk management leads in partner institutions and sponsors, particularly in King’s Health Partners (KHP) and the associated NHS Trusts, in order to support effective risk management for all research activity within the university; 

  • Support effective risk management in all systems development within the Research and Researcher Function, as appropriate, including close collaboration on the on-going development of the Finance system to support the specific needs of awards management. From time to time, and at the invitation of the Operations Director, this may include representing the interests of the Research and Researcher Function on certain project or programme boards.
