Bush House

Bush House Buildings

In July 2015 King’s signed 50 year leases on five buildings – Bush House North & South Wings, Bush House North East Wing, Bush House South East Wing, Bush House North West Wing, and Melbourne House – on Aldwych.

We have now moved staff and students into these new buildings, which provide a home for many of our academic departments, as well as state-of-the-art learning and social spaces and enhanced student facilities.

This enhancement of the Strand Campus will help us consolidate our position as a top 25 global university by providing world class education and research facilities. Acquiring the Bush House buildings will enable us to create a wonderful and dynamic campus in the heart of London by uniting two prime central London locations, the Aldwych and our historic Strand Campus, providing state of the art education and learning facilities for our students.

Bush House North & South Wings

Bush House North & South Wings form the centre of Bush House buildings. The former home of the BBC World Service, they feature the iconic Kingsway portico entrance with its neoclassical columns and statues, as well as the building’s main lobby.

They also features a 395-seat auditorium, lecture theatres, teaching rooms, departmental spaces, the Arcade, housing a café, the official Union Shop and a cultural space. Two roof terraces on the eight floor offer stunning views across London.

Bush House North East Wing

The North-East Wing features nine levels of departmental space and teaching rooms, as well as The Exchange, an open, collaborative space designed for events, exhibitions and breakout space. There are also showers, bike storage and a prayer and quiet room.

The Faculty Office of for Social Science & Public Policy and the School of Politics & Economics moved across in Autumn 2017, with the School of Global Affairs following in 2018.

Bush House South East Wing

The fit-out of the South East Wing was completed in summer 2018, and King's Foundations (formerly known as the English Language Centre), Student Support & Wellbeing Services, NHS Health Centre, Careers & Employability and KCLSU have now moved in.

The South-East Wing features the Strand entrance, a student hub, café and bar facilities, teaching spaces, informal learning spaces, and staff showers.

Bush House North West Wing

We have also taken a pre-let of the Bush House North West building, comprising approximately 65,000 sq. ft. on a long-term 50 year lease from 2017. Refurbishment works were completed in the summer of 2017, when the building was handed over to King's, and we’re currently sub-letting it to tenants.

Melbourne House

King’s is currently subletting Melbourne House for 10 years, and is due to move into it from 2025.

The courtyard was resurfaced and two stunning glass structures - known as the Pavillion - were added. The Pavilion provides a reception, information point and access to the Undercroft. The courtyard reopened in summer 2018 and provides outside space which is available for socialising and events.

The Undercroft is a central area below ground level which connects the North & South, North East and South East Wings. It was fully opened in summer 2018, and features a KCLSU bar called The Vault, a café/restaurant, informal learning and social spaces, bike racks, and showers.
