Opening of Year Services 2018
The Opening of Year Service took place on Wednesday 26 September 2018 at 13.10 in the College Chapel on the Strand Campus. The service is held annually on the first Wednesday of the new undergraduate term and has come to be one of the largest and most significant services in the King’s year. With an academic procession and a distinguished visiting preacher, senior College Officers and the President of the Students’ Union will attend. The service is usually led by the Dean of King’s College London, the Revd Canon Professor Richard Burridge FKC, but since he was attending an international New Testament conference in Moscow, and giving lectures for the Metropolitan Archbishop, he delegated this role to the College Chaplain, the Revd Tim Ditchfield FKC.
Every year King’s invites a visiting preacher who often reflects on the College’s Christian heritage and the place of this in the search for truth in Higher Education and is also a time to re-commit to working together as a university community.
This year’s preacher was Prof Russell Goulbourne - you can read his sermon here (pdf, 281 KB).
Past preachers have included The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, and King’s alumna, the Rt Revd Dame Sarah Mullally, Bishop of Crediton and former Chief Nursing Officer for England; King’s alumnus, the Very Revd Dr David Ison FKC, Dean of St Paul’s; the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam AKC FKC, Bishop of Salisbury (also a King’s alumnus and Fellow, who installed the Principal in his stall during the 2014 service); the former Principal Professor Sir Rick Trainor FKC (2013), the Most Revd Vincent Nichols, Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster (2010), and former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams (2002).
The service included an New Testament reading (Colossians 3:12-17), read by Prof Edward Byrne, President & Principal of King's College London, and a Gospel reading (Luke 2:41-52), read by Lienkie Diedericks, a PhD student in Global Health & Social Medicine. Sir Christopher Geidt, Chairman of the College Council, Mr Andrew Summers CMG, Lay member of the College Council, Prof Paul Joyce, Professor of Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, Prof Edward Adams, Professor of New Testament Studies, and Mr Ahad Mahmood, President of King's College London Students' Union, were in attendance. The Choir sang two anthems, and the College Chaplain, on behalf of the Dean in his absence, welcomed and introduced the new Orthodox Lay Chaplain, James Johnson, and the two new Chaplaincy Assistants, George Haggett and Aleksandra Tomaszewska, and blessed the whole Chaplaincy team in their ministry for this coming year.
The College Chaplain also thanked all those in attendance (and those who couldn't be!) that had contributed to the recent refurbishment of the College Chapel and the Father Willis Organ.
The service was followed by a reception on the Strand Terrace.
The Opening of Year Service at Guy’s took place on Thursday 27 September 2018 at 17.30 in the Chapel of Thomas Guy.
