Recycling

Don't Be Trashy

Welcome to King's #Dontbetrashy campaign, aiming to inspire our students to reduce waste, avoid single-use plastics, and improve recycling of unavoidable waste.

As well as providing helpful guides to reducing waste, the #Dontbetrashy campaign includes piloting different behaviour change 'nudges', and measuring over the coming months which interventions have the greatest impact on reducing waste.

From community gallery posters showcasing our wonderful cleaning team, to eye-catching labels reminding to freeze leftovers, to a bespoke reuse kit filled with waste-saving gadgets, we're helping students adopt a minimal waste lifestyle (and save money in the process!).

All students can pledge to support the #DontBeTrashy campaign by clicking the 'Pledge Now' button, and can take action by following our handy guides.

What You Can Do to Reduce Waste

Reuse 'How To' Guide:

Every year the UK wastes around 10 million tonnes of packaging and half of this comes from our homes. We have put together the ultimate 'How To' Guide to help you reduce how much you throw away.

On-the-go:

Short on time and just want to know the essential tips on how to reduce waste on-the-go? We have a quick guide with easy actions you can build into your daily life to make a difference.

Food Shopping:

Food shopping for one person can be tricky when you haven't done it before, and you may overbuy, wasting food and money. However, by planning ahead for the week you'll become a pro in no time.

Takeaway meals:

There's no doubt takeaways are tasty and convenient, but do you know how easy it is to make your favourite dishes at home? Cooking together is a great way to bond with flat-mates, and you'll be surprised at how much money you can save. Your meals will also be much healthier. We have created several easy-to-follow recipes to get you started.

Food Waste:

You can avoid throwing food away by knowing some simple tips on the difference between 'use by' and 'best before' dates, how to get your portion planning right, and how to store different foods to make them last longer

In the Bathroom:

the simplest way to reduce waste in the bathroom is to switch from liquid shower gels to soap bars, and from liquid shampoo/conditioner to delicious smelling solid bars like those sold by Lush.

Useful Resources:

#Dontbetrashy has been developed in collaboration with Hubbub, a behavioural change charity that works to inspire people to make healthier, greener lifestyle choices, which more often than not help save money and bring communities together.
