What does Fairtrade really mean? Why is it important? What are its limitations? What are new Fairtrade developments? How accessible are ethical choices?

Attend this event to find out about these questions and more, being organised as part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2023. King's Sustainability will be joined by Ruth Strange from Ethical Consumer and King's Food who will be sharing their approach to Fairtrade and ethical purchasing. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

Ethical Consumer is an independent, not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder co-operative, founded in 1989. They publish an alternative consumer magazine, 6 times a year. Their website contains over 100 shopping guides, from bananas to video conferencing, rating companies on their ethics. Their ratings cover around 300 topics in 19 areas in 5 main categories. They add Product Sustainability marks for Fairtrade products.

Ruth Strange has been a researcher and writer at the Ethical Consumer co-operative since 2015. She also helped establish a wholefood shop in Derby in 2005 which stocked as much Fairtrade food as possible, and has helped at events showcasing Fairtrade producers such as Zaytoun olive oil farmers from Palestine, and Just Change tea growers from India.

King's Food is our in-house catering team, and run cafés, restaurants and hospitality for events on campus. They are continuously embedding sustainability initiatives into their operations. Find out more here
