The Centre for Climate Law and Governance and the Centre for International Governance and Dispute Resolution are pleased to present an event series on international adjudication and climate change.

For the first event we are delighted to invite you to a timely panel discussion on the forthcoming Advisory Opinion of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on the Climate Emergency and Human Rights.

Abstract

In response to a joint request by Colombia and Chile, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights is currently considering an Advisory Opinion on the obligations of states under international human rights law in the context of the climate emergency. This proceeding has attracted unprecedented participation from states, international organisations, and civil society, reflecting the global significance of the Court’s forthcoming opinion. The questions posed to the Court address both individual and collective dimensions of human rights, and the outcome may shape the legal landscape for climate governance across the Americas and beyond. This event brings together leading experts to examine the submissions made to the Court, explore potential outcomes, and reflect on the broader implications for international law and climate justice.

Speakers will include:

  • HE Ambassador Ximena Fuentes, Ambassador of Chile to the United Kingdom
  • Dr. Massimo Lando, University of Hong Kong.
  • Dr. Lucas Carlos Lima, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. (Online)
  • Dr. Ludovica Chiussi Curzi, University of Bologna
  • Edward Perez, University College London.

The event will be introduced and moderated by Niccolò Ridi and Clara López.

Programme:

  • 18:00 - 19:30 presentations and panel discussion
  • 19:30 – 20.30 drinks reception
