Biography
Clara is lecturer in law at King's College London where she teaches international dispute resolution, public international law and Spanish public and private law. She is the Deputy Director of the Centre for Climate Law and Governance, Deputy Director of the Spanish English LLB and member of the Centre for International Governance and Dispute Resolution (CIGAD). Clara joined King’s College London as lecturer in January 2024. From 2018 to 2023 she was visiting lecturer in international investment law at the School of Law and in international law at the War Studies Department of King's College London.
Her research focuses on how law shapes exploration and extraction of critical minerals and the intersection between international investment law, human rights and environmental law. Clara has published in high impact journals such as the Journal of International Economic Law and Uniform Law Review as well as in edited collections by OUP and Brill. She is currently working on a monograph on the Law of Mineral Exploration and Extraction. She is co-editor with Prof. Holger Hestermeyer of the Research Handbook on International Economic Law and Human Rights (Edward Elgar Research Handbook series, forthcoming). Her research has been funded by prestigious awards including a Law Schools Global League Grant for the collective project ‘Gendering the Energy Transition’, the Modern Law Review Scholarship and Simon Roberts Award, an ICCA Johnny Veeder Fellowship, and a la Caixa Fellowship.
Clara is committed to education; she is an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and she is Co-PI in a project that aims to embed sustainability in the law curriculum. She has been an invited lecturer at the London School of Economics. Clara holds a PhD from King's College London, an LLM in International Dispute Resolution from Queen Mary University of London and a degree in Law and Business from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Before joining academia, Clara was a litigation and arbitration associate in law firms in Spain and Peru and she is admitted to practice in both jurisdictions. She has acted as counsel in arbitrations carried out under the auspices of the ICC, ICSID, Corte de Arbitraje de la Cámara de Comercio de Lima, Centro de Resolución de Disputas PUCP and Corte Civil y Mercantil de Arbitraje de Madrid. She has experience in commercial, construction, energy and investment arbitration. She also worked as a research assistant at UNIDROIT in Rome.
