This month we are joined by Jay Patel, Lecturer in Functional Photonics in the Department of Physics at King's College London, who will address the vital contribution of photovoltaic technology in achieving and surpassing net zero emissions, with a primary focus on recent advancements in thin-film photovoltaic technology.

Speaker bio

Jay Patel currently focuses on advancing multi-junction perovskite solar cells with a high power-to-weight ratio. This research is conducted at the National Thin Film Cluster Facility for Advanced Functional Materials, which is hosted by the University of Oxford, London Centre of Nanotechnology, and King’s College London. His groups work extends to the development of emerging semiconductors for energy applications, along with a keen interest in understanding the thin-film growth processes during vapor deposition of these novel materials. His research lies at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and materials science.

Dr Patel received his MChem degree from the University of Warwick in 2014 and completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford in 2019. Following that, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Renewable & Sustainable Energy Institute, a collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the University of Colorado Boulder, from 2019 to 2022. From 2022 to 2023, he held positions as a David Clarke EPSRC Fellow and Fulford Junior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. In 2023, he joined King's College London as a lecturer in Functional Photonics.

Net Zero Interdisciplinary Seminar Series

The Net Zero Interdisciplinary Seminar Series is the flagship seminar series for King’s College London’s Net Zero Centre, providing a platform for cross-pollination between academia, industry and government to develop novel research projects to achieve Net Zero.

Every month, we host a speaker to discuss a new research idea and seek contributions from audience members on a proposed challenge. A half-hour talk is followed by a discussion, and we encourage speakers to engage with colleagues on research related to our four priority areas, decarbonisation, sustainable manufacturing, equitable resource allocation and resilient infrastructure.

About us

The Net Zero Centre at King's is dedicated to addressing the challenges of decarbonising our society and reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing, infrastructure, and cities. It serves as hub for scientific, technological and engineering research geared towards this challenge.

Based in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences (NMES), the Centre works across the boundaries of disciplines at King’s from geography and business to law and social science to deliver solutions for sustainable development. The Centre fosters the next generation of King’s change-makers by educating scientists and engineers on the holistic context of these challenges and developing technologically aware social scientists, lawyers, and policy makers.
