About the book

Amid a rapidly evolving global development landscape, this book investigates two core ideas in development cooperation — responsibility and accountability — as they take shape within Southern-led development cooperation. Drawing on multi-site and multi-scalar research across Brazil, China, and India, it traces how diplomatic and domestic foreign-policy processes debate, negotiate, and operationalise emerging notions of donor responsibility and accountability in South-South cooperation.

The book reveals how these Southern powers justify, manage, and attempt to improve the performance of their international development engagements for diverse audiences at home and abroad. In doing so, it uncovers the uneven ways in which Southern actors are being integrated into the global donorship regime — simultaneously engaging with and contesting established norms and ways of doing and justifying “doing development abroad”.
