Join us online on 25 July 2025 for a timely conversation on the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion on climate change, to be delivered on 23 July 2025. This event, co-organised by the Centre for Climate Law and Governance and the Centre for International Governance and Dispute Resolution, brings together King’s College London experts to reflect on the Opinion’s implications across key areas of international law.

The request for the Advisory Opinion—initiated by Vanuatu and supported by over 130 states—asks the Court to clarify the obligations of states under international law to protect the climate system, and the legal consequences of failing to do so. It marks a historic moment in the intersection of climate change, human rights, and state responsibility.

Our panel will explore the Opinion’s significance for human rights, state responsibility, environmental law, and its potential ripple effects in finance and investment law.

The event will take place online on 25 July from 12:30 to 14:00 UK Time.

Speakers will include

  • Professor Federico Ortino
  • Professor Megan Bowman
  • Sue Willman KC
  • Dr Leslie-Anne Duvic-Paoli
  • Dr Niccolò Ridi
  • Dr Clara López

This is a unique opportunity to engage with early reflections on one of the most consequential legal developments in climate governance to date.
