- A unified approach for the statistical analysis of post-randomisation variables in clinical trials
- Precision medicine and mechanism: How and for whom do psychological treatments work?
- Transdiagnostic mechanisms in cognitive behavioural interventions for patients with Persistent Physical Symptoms: How do transdiagnostic psychological therapies work?
- Modelling Development and the Evolution of Morbidity
- Predicting diabetes in people with psychoses
We are seeking outstanding applicants from a wide range of backgrounds including: computer science; data science; mathematics; statistics; health informatics; applied and health statistics; machine and deep learning; natural language processing; text analytics; neuroscience; biological science; physical science; epidemiology, econometricians to work at the cutting edge of mental health research.
Standard PhD entry requirements: Applicants should have a Bachelors degree with 2:1 honours (or Overseas equivalent). A 2:2 degree may be considered only where applicants also offer a Masters with Merit.
Award types and eligibility: Funding is available for 3-year studentships. The award covers academic fees (Home/EU); a stipend and contribution towards training, conference attendance and research costs. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from non-EU / international candidates.

The Biostatistics and Health Informatics Department is a critical element within the Institute’s strategy to enhance the methodological quality of research and to secure its world class standing in the fields of Biostatistics and Health Informatics with application to psychological medicine, psychiatry and neuroscience. Currently the department is led by Professor Richard Dobson and has 55 full-time staff and fellows. We undertake methodological and collaborative research relevant to the complete span of the Institute’s interdisciplinary programme of research but particularly, through our UKCRC registered Clinical Trials Unit, in treatment evaluation and through our two BRC Themes in the capture, processing and analysis of patient data of all kinds. We also provide methodological training for clinical and non-clinical postgraduate staff and students. In addition, through our extensive programme of events and networks we facilitate collaboration and discussion among the diversity of statisticians, health informaticians, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, image analysts, econometricians and trialists that are spread across the Institute and King’s College.
