Appointment details

Salary

A competitive salary commensurate with the academic profile and experience of the successful applicant will be offered. Start-up packages would be subject to separate negotiation and would-be time-limited for the period of the Executive Dean appointment.

Period of Appointment:

There are two elements to this appointment: • Executive Dean of the Arts & Humanities. This appointment will be for five years in the first instance on an additional and separate contract to that of the substantive open ended appointment. The potential for a subsequent renewal as Executive Dean will follow an inclusive review process. • The substantive appointment is an ongoing academic contract, a permanent member of the academic staff of King’s College London. It is expected that the appointee will meet the criteria for an appointment at professorial level.

Role purpose

King’s College London is seeking an inspiring and strategic leader to serve as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. This pivotal role will shape the future direction of one of the world’s leading Arts and Humanities Faculties, fostering collaboration, advancing inclusive excellence, and driving outstanding research and education. The Executive Dean will nurture a culture of innovation, support, and shared purpose, guiding the Faculty through opportunities and challenges within the dynamic higher education landscape. The next Executive Dean will be instrumental in advancing the Faculty’s research excellence, fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture, and prioritising the well-being of staff and students. They will strengthen financial sustainability, advocate for the value of Arts and Humanities within and across the sector, and embed principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the core of all activities. Building on the Faculty’s strong interdisciplinary foundation, the Executive Dean will ensure transparent communication and trust across all levels of the Faculty while supporting innovative and collaborative approaches to education, research, and partnerships.

Main duties and responsibilities

Leadership, Strategy, Planning & Partnerships

• Collaborate with the Vice-Chancellor & President, Senior Vice President (Academic), and the University Executive to deliver King’s strategic vision and academic mission, with collective responsibility for institutional performance and success. • Provide strategic leadership for the Faculty, ensuring alignment with university-wide goals while delivering on the Faculty’s core priorities of research excellence, financial sustainability, and a world-class education experience. • Build and sustain strong internal and external partnerships, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations across King’s and nurturing relationships with government, industry, philanthropic donors, and international institutions. • Act as an advocate and ambassador for the Arts and Humanities, enhancing the Faculty’s reputation and promoting the value of the discipline within and beyond the university. • Lead initiatives that integrate philanthropic giving, international partnerships, and innovative approaches to blended education delivery into the Faculty’s strategic goals.

Education and Research

• Ensure the Faculty maintains its reputation for research excellence by fostering a culture of impactful scholarship, securing funding, and enabling high-quality outputs and interdisciplinary opportunities. • Work collaboratively with the VP (Education & Student Success) and support the Faculty Vice Dean (Education) to deliver an exceptional and inclusive student experience that equips students for academic, personal, and professional success. • Work collaboratively with the VP (Research & Innovation) and support the Faculty Vice Dean (Research) to advance sustainable research growth, promote impactful innovation, and enhance the Faculty’s research culture. • Encourage and support initiatives that drive interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships both within King’s and with external stakeholders.

People and Culture

• Promote an inclusive, positive, and collaborative culture across the Faculty, emphasising well-being, engagement, and a sense of belonging for staff and students. • Foster trust, transparency, and effective communication across all levels of the Faculty, while addressing and reducing hierarchical barriers. • Build and empower a supportive and collaborative senior leadership team, ensuring clear accountability and alignment with the Faculty’s mission and values. • Work closely with the Director of Operations to strengthen relationships and teamwork between academic and professional services staff, ensuring excellence in service delivery. • Advance and embed equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of Faculty operations, recruitment, and leadership.

Finance and Sustainability

• Lead the Faculty’s financial strategy, ensuring sustainable financial performance and identifying opportunities for revenue growth and diversification. • Drive initiatives that secure philanthropic engagement and funding aligned with the Faculty’s ambitions. • Oversee the effective deployment of resources to maximize efficiency and ensure delivery of strategic priorities. • Encourage innovation and collaborative thinking within the Faculty to identify and execute strategic opportunities.

King’s is searching for an outstanding individual for the role of Executive Dean at an exciting time in the Faculty’s history. The appointee will be a leading academic with a substantial track record in research, education and leadership in and across disciplines relevant to the Faculty. Executive Deans at King’s are members of the Academic Board, and the University Executive and so they play a pivotal role in the leadership, management and governance of the University. The University Executive sets the strategic direction and objectives to achieve the overall mission governed by the Council, oversees resource allocation and management of corporate risk and sets the tone, for the culture and values of the King’s community. Executive Deans therefore play a key role within the network of the University’s senior management. Executive Deans of the nine Faculties report to the Senior Vice President (Academic).
