What’s it like to have a partner in the UK military? The social and psychological experiences of women

Rachael Gribble 

This PhD will investigate social and mental health and wellbeing of military S/Ps in the UK and determine which social and military factors are influential in social and mental health outcomes. It will also add to the growing field of research in this area by developing an understanding of the factors that influence wellbeing among military partners during relocation.

Help-seeking for mental health problems in UK Military Personnel

This PhD investigates the social influences and barriers to seeking healthcare for mental health problems in UK military personnel. 

In-service offending behaviour in the UK military

Jamie Kwan

This PhD will investigate offending behaviour for all offence categories during service for military personnel using military police offence records.  It will also examine domestic violence as an offence category.

Military veteran transition into employment and successful civilian independence: A Walking With The Wounded service evaluation
Rebecca Dunn
This PhD will be an independent evaluation of three of the programmes run by Walking With The Wounded in order to support service improvement.  Alongside this, the project aims to provide a clear landscape of the needs, views and experiences of wounded, injured and sick veterans (physically, mentally or socially) particularly during resettlement; proposing to recommend effective programmes, methods and/or strategies to help veterans engage and become successful, independent and ultimately employed members of civilian society.
Alcohol (mis)use among the UK Armed Forces – Trajectories of use, the impact on health, functioning and relationships and reasons for misuse
Laura Palmer

This PhD will examine trajectories of alcohol misuse within the UK military and explore relationships with other variables such as military factors, childhood adversity, adult trauma and other social and health issues. A qualitative investigation will also look into reasons behind patterns of alcohol behaviour in veterans.

This PhD focused on the transition from military to civilian life, which involves not only re-entering the labour market but also a broader social process of re-engagement with wider society.
