King’s is delighted to be one of the founding partners of the Martingale Foundation established to support students hoping to study for a PhD in STEM subjects.

Martingale Foundation will prioritise students for whom family income is a barrier to postgraduate study. The first Martingdale scholars will study Mathematics, with those coming to King's joining a department with a rich research culture. Welcoming the new initiative Professor Steve Gilmour, Head of the Department, said:

“Our new collaboration with the Martingale Foundation is an exciting opportunity for budding mathematicians and for the Department of Mathematics at King’s. As a growing department it is essential that we recruit the best PhD students from all backgrounds and this is a great opportunity. We look forward to welcoming our first Martingale scholars next year.”

King’s is committed to improving participation in Mathematics at all levels for people from all backgrounds and runs regular outreach for schools as well as widening participation programmes for higher education. Professor Luca Viganò,  Vice-Dean of Engagement & Enterprise for the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences, commented:

“Over time the Martingale programme will benefit students across STEM disciplines. For King’s it is particularly exciting that the first cohort will be mathematicians. Our involvement in maths education starts at school - we partner the King’s Maths School which is a specialist sixth form state school for students taking Maths and related subjects at A level. This new initiative is extremely welcome and timely in supporting more students to carry on with Maths at postgraduate and doctorate level.”
