Dr Andrew D'Souza

Research Associate

Biography

Andrew obtained his doctorate in Integrative Exercise Physiology from Western University, Canada, in 2023 under the supervision of Dr Kevin Shoemaker.

During his doctoral training, he trained under Dr Qi Fu at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine in Dallas, Texas to learn microneurography (the only direct measurement of sympathetic nervous system activity in humans). His doctoral research focused on the impact of biological sex and sex hormones on the reflex control of the circulation.

He then undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Alberta, Canada, with Dr Michael Stickland, where he investigated:

  • the mechanisms governing pulmonary vascular function in health
  • pharmacological management of exertional breathlessness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • the mechanisms of exertional breathlessness in patients with systemic sclerosis.

Andrew joined King’s College London in October 2025 as a Research Associate in Human Autonomic Cardiorespiratory Physiology.

Andrew’s research programme seeks to understand how the human autonomic, respiratory and cardiovascular systems interact, respond and adapt to physiological and pathophysiological stressors such as exercise and disease respectively.

His current research at King’s evaluates:

  • the respiratory influences on neuro-cardiovascular control in humans
  • the mechanisms that contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and interventions that can reverse and/or prevent cardiovascular disease risk in clinical populations.
