Biography

Dr. Asja Garling completed her PhD in Toulouse (France) in the IRSD lab, where she developed a new vaccine based on outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) to control enterohemorrhagic E. coli in ruminants. She also engineered fluorescently labeled OMVs to visualize them both in vitro and in vivo, and to better understand how OMVs disseminate within the host and their role in bacteria–host communication. She joined Wanford’s team as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Infectious Diseases. Her research focuses on understanding the in vivo dynamics of rmpA phase variation in hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae using mouse models.

Wanford Group

The Wanford lab employs genomic, and wet lab infection biology techniques to study: (1) how Kp regulate expression of its major virulence factor, a slimy layer surrounding the pathogen called the polysaccharide capsule, and (2) how both the capsule and other accessory genes modulate interaction of Kp with host cells
