Dr Divya Parmar

Senior Lecturer in Global Health

Biography

Dr Divya Parmar is a Senior Lecturer in Global Health. Divya’s work focuses on global health systems, cutting across topics of universal health coverage, health financing, maternal and adolescent health, non-communicable diseases and social determinants of health. She is particularly interested in understanding how gender and socioeconomic factors influence health care needs and access to health services. Her research is primarily based in low and middle-income countries.

She has received research grants from the German International Cooperation Agency (GiZ), ESRC and UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund. Divya’s health policy work includes working at the World Health Organization looking at gender and equity in universal health coverage, which resulted in a standalone report and a chapter in WHO’s Universal Health Coverage Global Monitoring Report 2019. Previously she had worked at City, University of London and at the London School of Economics. She has a PhD from Heidelberg Institute of Global Health, Germany, Master’s in International Health Systems from John’s Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA and Master’s in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India.

Central to our research is understanding and tackling the systemic and intersecting drivers of disparities in health over the life course such as racism, gender, crime, precarious livelihoods, environmental pollution, and inaccessible health care. We work collaboratively across the School of Life Course and Population Sciences to strengthen the theoretical aspects of population health research.
