Dr Giancarlo Forte PhD

Senior Lecturer in Cardiac Mechanobiology

Biography

Giancarlo Forte obtained his Master Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy), where he also defended his PhD in Experimental Pathophysiology in 2005.

After his graduation, he was a visiting researcher at the University Karls Eberhard in Tuebingen, Germany and next became a postdoctoral fellow at the Italian Institute for Cardiovascular Research (INRC). In 2006 he moved to Japan where he first joined Tokyo Women’s Medical University as a visiting scientist and then was appointed a Lead Researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan. At the same time, he also held a MANA Scientist post at the World Premiere Institute for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA) in the same country. In 2013 Dr. Forte moved to a Senior Scientist position in the newly established International Clinical Research Center (ICRC) of St. Anne’s University Hospital, Brno (Czech Republic), where he later founded the Center for Translational Medicine (CTM).

From 2016 to 2023 he was the Head of CTM and Principal Investigator of the Mechanobiology of Disease Group within ICRC. In 2019 he was nominated Deputy Director for Science of the Institute and held the post until the end of 2021. From March 2023 Dr. Forte is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre of Excellence of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine and Sciences at King’s College London, UK.

The Forte group adopts interdisciplinary approaches based on induced pluripotent stem cells, 3D advanced disease models, imaging and bioengineering to unveil the impact of biomechanical stress and ECM remodelling on mechanosensitive DNA transcription and RNA metabolism.
