Research interests

Houshen’s research interest is in palliative care outcome measurement, tool validation and advanced cancer. His PhD project is a translation and validation study of the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) in cancer patients in China. IPOS has been welcomed by patients and professionals as more streamlined in several languages and it can capture multidimensional needs for palliative care patients. His study aims to translate IPOS into Chinese, ensure appropriate cultural adaptation and determine its psychometric properties. The results of his PhD work can potentially inform future palliative care improvement in China in terms of engaging both patients and clinicians as active participants in patient-reported outcome monitoring, changing health care delivery system where patient-centredness is prioritised, and optimising the experience, efficiency, and outcomes of care.
