Senior Lecturer in German Language Education

Biography

Jonas Langner joined the King's Language Centre in 2018. He completed his  Zusatzzertifikat “Deutsch als Fremdsprache” (2005) and Staatsexamen für das Lehramt an Gymnasien: English and German (2007)  at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. He also completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Research and Professional Studies in Education (2012) and Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2014) at University of Bristol, UK. He speaks German, English and Swedish. Jonas is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is also Team Leader for Germanic Languages and Modern Greek, Programme Director for Postgraduate Provision and Deputy Chair of the CIEL Education (2023-2026). 

Jonas oversees King’s Language Centre’s provision for Dutch, German, Modern Greek and Swedish. He has overall responsibility for the coordination, development and delivery of classes across all provisions and teaches German classes in different programmes himself. Jonas also leads on the setting, delivery and marking of assessment for German modules. He manages all lecturers and teaches in his team regularly organises and delivers staff development sessions for the team and beyond. As the Programme Director for Postgraduate Provision in King’s Language Centre, Jonas has overall responsibility for the development and delivery of the PG only and Doctoral Training Programme for all languages. 

Research, Scholarly projects and Academic Awards 

Jonas’s scholarship focusses on using mediation according to the Common European Framework of References (CEFR) Companion Volume for authentic assessment of languages. The project, for which received funding from the College Teaching Fund, aims to create a more relevant, authentic and effective language assessment framework that allows students to use the skills acquired in Language Modules in real-world challenges using tools they will also use outside the university context. This will help their employability since they can demonstrate transferable skills to future employers.
