Biography
Rebeca Ortega is Research Associate in the Department of Diabetes. She counts with a degree in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences and a Master degree in Research and Rational Use of Medicines, both from University of Valencia (UV), Spain. In 2022, she obtained her PhD in Biomedicine and Pharmacy from UV, in the field of immunovascular pharmacology. Her previous studies were focused on the searching of new therapeutic targets to prevent the chronic inflammatory state that governs cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm and obesity-induced insulin resistance. Currently, she is studying the role of miR-33 in regulating glucose homeostasis under supervision of Dr Bo Liu and Professor Shanta Persaud.
Research
Islet Biology Research Group
Our group studies the fundamental science of islets of Langerhans, from the molecular biology of beta-cells to their effects on whole body physiology. We research the mechanisms of islet dysfunction during type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes, identify novel therapeutic targets, and work to improve islet transplantation therapy for type 1 diabetes.
