CPR training provision in underserved communities, a survey of provision

By calling emergency services for help, starting CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and using a publicly accessible defibrillator (PAD) to give an electric shock to restart the heart, members of the public give someone having a cardiac arrest the best chance of survival. Being trained in CPR and PAD increases people’s confidence in helping at a real cardiac arrest.

There are some places in England where cardiac arrests are more common combined with fewer members of the public helping. These areas are in most need of training opportunities for the communities who live there. Typically, these areas have more people from global majority (ethnic minority) and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds living there.

Resuscitation skills training is provided by many different organisations in England. We don't know how much or what sort of training is available to global majority communities in the areas that need it most.

We will identify and survey organisations providing such training via an online questionnaire we have developed to get a picture of what is happening across the country, including any tailoring to communities’ needs.

The results will be useful to organisations that provide training and those that work to improve rates of survival from cardiac arrests.

Aims

To investigate the extent of resuscitation training provision that there is in England specifically tailored to underserved ethnic minority communities. The objectives are:

  • To identify which organisations engage with ethnic minority communities to raise awareness and provide training for resuscitation skills and where this is taking place in England.
  • To understand how these engagement, awareness and training activities take place particularly tailoring to specific minority communities.
  • To identify providers perceptions of what works to promote engagement and uptake in ethnic minority communities.

Methods

We developed a questionnaire and are now using it to conduct an online survey of organisations involved in resuscitation skills training in England.

Get Involved

If you are an organisation that delivers resuscitation skills training including to global majority (ethnic minority) communities in England or know of one that does and would like more information about taking part in our survey, please email the project team CPRtrainingprovisionstudy@kcl.ac.uk.
