We define Cultural Competence as the ability to view the world through the lens of other people – in all their diversity.

The diverse expertise we galvanise covers arts and humanities, sociology, cultural studies, applied linguistics, education, generative artificial intelligence and healthcare. Through empirical research and educational scholarship and innovation, the team generate new knowledge and educational initiatives concerning the most pressing global issues and ways to transform the culturally and linguistically diverse communication both locally and internationally.

Co-creation

The research Centre seeks to provide an open and supportive platform for networking and peer-support to both staff and students so it is open for new members through collaboration and co-creation. Researchers, academics, professional services staff (partnered with academics) and students (partnered with academics) who are interested in cultural competence research or educational scholarship can contact us for support by submitting a request to establish a Special Interest Group (SIG). Once accepted, a member of the centre will be assigned as an advisor to support the SIG, which will become a formal part of the Centre.

Special Interest Groups (SIG)

Becoming a Special Interest Group

We welcome proposals from teams interested in establishing a Special Interest Group (SIG) within the Research Centre. A SIG should bring together a team with a clearly defined aim for empirical research or educational scholarship related to cultural competence. Educational scholarship may involve the systematic study and evaluation of educational practices, interventions, curricula, resources, or programmes. It should aim to generate insights that inform practice and contribute to wider knowledge.

When approaching us, we ask that you have an initial project focus, a sense of what the group hopes to achieve, and a team interested in taking the work forward.

If you would like to propose a new SIG, please complete the application form. We will review your proposal and contact you to discuss the next steps.
