We build an understanding of the impacts of environmental change and develop ways of safeguarding ecosystems and mitigating emissions through sustainable solutions.
Our researchers work to identify critical research gaps, advancing knowledge across key areas such as climate and environmental change, wildfire management, nature-based solutions, and sustainable water systems, supporting development of appropriate and acceptable solutions across global contexts.
Understanding impacts of socio-environmental change is a key step in protecting the world’s ecosystems and the services they provide to people, as well as reducing carbon emissions and increasing carbon sinks. Projects that address these areas cover a wide scope from warming-induced heatwaves to how fires spread, the movement of novel chemical pollutants through ecosystems, using photo-identification and genetic data to improve conservation, bringing together data to provide policy support, and combining palaeoclimate data and genomic sequencing of microbial communities to better understand impacts on the natural world.
These projects develop and apply innovative technologies, tools and methodologies including novel mathematical modelling, new monitoring systems and defining new value systems for ecosystem services.
