This is a Fluxion/Cell Microsystems BioFlux 1000z microfluidic system combined with a Zeiss LSM900 confocal microscope with Airyscan 2 for studying microbial biofilm growth. The equipment can be run as an integrated system, which enables monitoring spatial/temporal biofilm growth and the effect of external factors (e.g. antimicrobials) on biofilm structures in real time. This equipment can also be used separately; for example, growing microfluidic biofilms off the microscope, and using the microscope to study other samples.

MBRH integrated biofilm microfluidics and confocal microscope system

The BioFlux instrument allows for growth of microbial biofilms on a range of substrate materials and under precise environmental control (e.g. temperature, shear flow, gas, mixed/gradient media input). It uses a well plate format, ranging from 6-well, 24-well to 48-well, with integrated microfluidics, for the delivery of different initial volumes of inlet media, the use of single or dual inlet channels.

The Zeiss LSM900 is equipped with 4 lasers (405/488/561/639nm) and 4 objectives (10x/20x/40xW/63xO/100xO), 2x GaAsP confocal detectors, 1x transmitted light detector as well as an Airyscan 2 detector. It also has fluorescence for visualisation of DAPI, GFP, RFP or associated fluorophores.
