The Centre for Early Modern Studies was established in 2015 to promote research in the early modern period (understood, here, in its broadest sense as 1400-1700). We aim to facilitate interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research projects, and to support and develop innovative graduate study in the field. As a Centre, we are committed not only to promoting a historical understanding across a broad range of cultures, but to thinking through the present in historically-informed ways.

The Centre runs a regular programme of public engagement and public-facing events. We also coordinate a number of highly collaborative ongoing research projects. Current partners and collaborators include historians of race, gender, and language as well as contemporary artists, cartographers, and scientists. We are particularly proud of our commitment to the PGR/ECR community, for whom we lead skills and training workshops, offer mentorship and funding schemes, and provide opportunities for participation, publication, and research development in an innovative intellectual environment.

To keep up to date with our latest events and research outputs, head to our blog.

We welcome proposals for conferences, workshops, and other events that promote the Centre’s intellectual agenda and the public understanding of the early modern period. So please do get in touch.
