UK Gender Equality Index

Gender inequality remains a persistent problem in the UK, affecting multiple dimensions of women’s and men’s lives. Mounting evidence of neighbourhood effects on socio-economic outcomes suggests that gender inequalities are experienced differently across local areas. For potential policy interventions to be effective, we need to understand the spatial variations in gender differences. Yet, to date, no comprehensive sub-national measure of gender equality exists for the UK.

With funding from the Lloyds Banking Group, the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL) at King’s College London is developing a new index to compare levels of gender equality across local areas. It will provide a benchmarking tool to aid further research and inform targeted policy intervention in pursuit of equality and higher quality of life for all.

Research team

From the King's Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London, Dr Caitlin Schmid (Research Fellow) is leading the project in collaboration with Dr Chimdimma Ona (Research Associate) and Dr Minna Cowper-Coles (Research Fellow) under the supervision of Dr Rose Cook (Senior Research Fellow) and Prof Rosie Campbell (Director).

Supported by external project partners Prof Anne Laure Humbert (Professor of Gender and Statistics, Oxford Brookes University), Dr Victor Sojo Monzon (Senior Lecturer in Leadership, University of Melbourne) and Jonathan Rankin (Visiting Research Fellow, GIWL and Head of Data at MyTutor).
