The 27th Conference of the Parties - COP27 - brought together representatives from the 198 countries that have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Student Voices

As COP27 got underway, we asked students from the Human Rights and Environment (HRE) Clinic, part of King's Legal Clinic, for their thoughts on the United Nations climate change conference.

We received an impressive range of responses, with students sharing their perspectives on areas including loss and damage, the need to mainstream a human rights-based approach, and the importance of involving indigenous communities in the decision-making process.

In 2021, the Clinic launched a collaboration with two Indian universities, looking at possible routes to climate justice for communities in the Sundarbans, a low-lying area on the border of India and Bangladesh.

The Clinic has also been involved in the debate on Rights of Nature, supporting legal submissions in cases in Uganda and Serbia which employ Rights of Nature arguments.

In July 2022, The Dickson Poon School of Law launched a new LLM module, Transnational Remedies for Environmental Harm with Clinical Legal Education. The new module has been developed in partnership with West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) and Jindal Global Law School (JGLS). Students based in India and the UK will study together, to facilitate cross-cultural learning, with all three universities contributing to teaching.
