Department of Women & Children’s Health

Our aim is to improve the health of women and their children.

Central to all we do is the concept of the life course of health. The physical and mental health of the next generation begins at the earliest stages, so our research spans preconception, maternity, infancy and adolescence.

We combine more than 100 experts in obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology with specialists in a range of paediatric disorders. We deliver multidisciplinary teaching to King’s undergraduate and postgraduate students and dedicated training to healthcare professionals.

Our clinicians and scientists work across the UK and internationally to better understand the causes of women’s and children’s diseases. We advise governments, improve the delivery and management of health services and develop new diagnostic techniques.

We proposed the ‘continuity of carer’ model of maternity care now adopted by the UK government, showed that peanut allergy can be minimised by regular consumption in early life and invented the CRADLE device: an accurate and cheap way to monitor vital signs during pregnancy which could save as many as 70,000 lives every year.
