Nutritional Sciences

Head of Division: Professor Tom Sanders

Professor Tom Sanders
Our work is concerned with predicting how food intake affects health. In order to do this we need to understand the biological mechanisms by which food constituents are absorbed and metabolized and their physiological role in the body. Our research spans that concerned with molecular basis of human nutrition through to dietary surveys, intervention trials and programmes. There are three major research themes: diet and cardiovascular health, diet and gastrointestinal health and mineral metabolism. These themes bring together multidisciplinary groups of clinicians, molecular biologists, physiologists and nutritionists to address specific research questions. The Division has clinical research facilities for human studies at both Franklin-Wilkins Building and St Thomas’ Hospital. The Division has well equipped laboratories on the 3rd and 4th floor of the Franklin-Wilkins Building with access to the Mass Spectrometry and the Genomics Centres. The Division currently comprises 22 principal investigators, 34 research staff and 32 doctoral students. Research is supported by the BBSRC, MRC, Food Standards Agency, European Union and the British Heart Foundation.
