Dr Brian Millar appointed Visiting Professor
Dr Brian Millar, Director of Distance Learning at the Dental Institute, has been appointed as Visiting Professor in Restorative Dentistry in Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Dental Sciences & Hospital (SDM), Dharwad, India, for a three year period. The position will involve expanding the link between King’s College London and SDM, along with the responsibility of advising and assisting with career options for those graduates wishing to undertake higher degrees. There are plans to offer external PhD places in the future and Dr Millar is helping the Dental Institute at SDM to set up a master’s programme in their newly opened Department of General Dental Practice. The programme is based on the MSc Advanced General Dental Practice at King’s, with dentists undertaking the clinical work at SDM and King’s providing the online educational material.
At present, King’s offer two of its flexible graduate programmes at SDM and at the M A Rangoonwala College of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, Pune, India.
Dr Millar commented: ‘I am delighted to accept this as recognition of King’s and my involvement at SDM. For King’s, it is in recognition of our involvement in dental education in India through the promotion of high quality teaching; showing the benefits of blended education from a world leading Dental Institute to work with partners abroad.
‘For me personally, it marks 5 years of working with SDM, setting up the link with King’s, establishing a training centre at SDM for our face-to-face courses, teaching on King’s programmes in India, as well as negotiating with the Dental Council of India to have our programmes recognised. We now work together in providing education to dentists in India and the surrounding countries through our online and face-to-face programmes.’
