Department of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy is one of the largest and most distinguished in the country. We have 22 permanent academic staff and 4 research fellows, and teach a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. We have research strengths in: history of philosophy; philosophy of mind and psychology; philosophy of language and linguistics; metaphysics and philosophy of science; ethics, politics and aesthetics.RAE 2008
King's has been ranked as one of the top three UK philosophy departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

The AHRC has allocated our Department 4 Doctoral Awards and 4 Master's Awards for UK and EU graduate students in philosophy. This is over 10% of the total allocated to UK universities and the largest single allocation apart from Oxford. The closing date for King's AHRC applications was 1 February 2010. There are also other funding opportunities for prospective graduate students who want to come to our Department. For full details see here.
The Welcome Trust has made a £1.95 million award for 2009-14 to King's for research in the Medical Humanities, including the Philosophy of Medicine. As part of this project, two Wellcome Studentships to do a PhD in our Department will be awarded. One is for a PhD in the Philosophy of Medicine and one is for a PhD in the Philosophy of Psychiatry. The deadline for applying was 1 February.

Professor MM McCabe has been elected President of the British Philosophical Association and Professor David Papineau has been elected President of the Mind Association.
Zach Abrahams from Cornell is here this year on a Norman Malcolm Fellowship, and Michael Campbell from King's is visiting Singapore and Monash this term on a King's Partnership grant. These are part of our programme of financially supported exchanges, which allows our students to spend time at other universities including Cornell and North Carolina.
