Debbie Snell

Senior Clinical Psychologist, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service
Canterbury District Health Board
Christchurch, New Zealand

“It was just a silly knock”: How do patient understandings and injury beliefs influence recovery?

Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) can result in persisting disability in a significant minority of cases even though complete recovery is expected. Such poor outcomes and the factors influencing them remain poorly understood. While research in other health conditions suggests that psychological factors such as coping styles and patient beliefs about symptoms and recovery can have powerful explanatory utility, these constructs have not been systematically explored in MTBI. Debbie will present some of her research examining whether these factors can contribute to understanding and predicting clinical outcomes after MTBI.
She is a Clinical Psychologist with a strong background in neuropsychological rehabilitation and over the past nine years has been co-ordinating a specialist Concussion Clinic for the Canterbury District Health Board in Christchurch New Zealand.
