Materials Research Group
The Materials Group has an international reputation for the fabrication, analysis and computational modelling of nano/bio materials. We have an interdisciplinary approach, and have active collaborations with biologists, chemists, physicists, computer scientists, and engineers. We are funded from a wide variety of sources including the EPSRC, BBSRC, NESTA, and Sandia National Laboratories. We run Materials Library, a materials archive constructed to enable collaboration in the interface between materials scientists and artists, designers, jewellers, architects, and others interested in materials.NEWS
Work on developing our Materials Library was the subject of a six page feature article in the Financial Times.
Dr Samjid Mannan has been awarded a King's Teaching Excellence Award.
Dr Mark Miodownik's report for the UK Governement's Technology Strategy Board on Materials for the Creative Industries was be launched at the House of Lords on the 11th June 2009.
New Lectureships Available: Applications are invited for a permanent Reader/Senior Lecturer and three temporary lectureships in the Division of Engineering to be taken up with effect from 1 June 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter. Further details and application packs are available on the College’s website for the Reader/Senior Lecturer and the three fixed term lectureships, or alternatively by emailing Human Resources at jcmbjobs@kcl.ac.uk. All correspondence should clearly state the job title and reference number G7/CEE/028/09.
TYC Open Day: The London Centre for Theory and Simulation of Materials, which is a joint venture between King's College London, UCL and Imperial College is having an open day to advertise PhD opportunities, see here for details: TYC
PhD Studentships available for 2009: A project with Dr Mark Miodownik and Dr Patrick Mesquida
The Materials Research Group wins a grant for a new 3D Fabricator - the machine is operational from Jan 2009.
Coming Up: The fourth in the series of our seminars on New Materials and New Technologies, where we bring together scientists, engineers, anthropologists, architects, designers, writers, and artists to discuss the role of new materials in innovation and society - 3rd November 1-7pm.
Materials Group wins grant for new 3D Fabricator The new machine will be up and running in the Autumn 2008 and is co-funded by the Annual Fund and the Engineering Division.
Mark Miodownik presented radio programme called "Who Needs Scientists" for BBC Radio 4, which was 'Pick of the Week' on 6th April 2008.
Materials Group Research featured on the front cover of Langmuir Journal - Chris Lorenz's work is the focus of the cover of Langmuir, Vol. 24, Issue 04, Feb, 2008.
PhD Student Available in nanoscale materials science using molecular dynamics simulations. The funding is available for a UK postgraduate PhD student to conduct research with Dr Chris Lorenz focussing on understanding the atomic/molecular scale behaviour of materials near interfaces using molecular dynamics simulations. There are several nanoscience and/or bio-related projects from which the successful candidate can choose. Please contact Dr Chris Lorenz for more details.
New Semiar Series: We are co-organising a series of seminars on New Materials and New Technologies, sponsored by the ESRC, King's College London, University College London and MADE. This is a collaboration between material engineers, artists, designers, and social scientists. We will have speakers from the worlds of nano-technology, rapid prototyping, history of science, sociology, art and design, theory and practice, as well as others with interests in the emergence of new materials and new technologies.
